Part I of this two-part blog series discussed what opportunities lie ahead for data centers to execute greener operations and five main areas that are most often missed including:

  • Unmanaged supply airflow delivery losses
  • Supply-to-load airflow capacity losses
  • Supply airflow to load ratio exceeded
  • Return setpoints too low and humidity setpoints too high
  • Lack of usage of built-in ‘ECO modes’

While these opportunities were identified as being the most missed solutions, we drill down into the why of how data centers miss these low-hanging fruits — efficiency solutions that already exist within a facility’s infrastructure, that are waiting to be activated. Here are the obstacles that Ascent has identified:

    • Overprioritization of IT components – Technology is constantly evolving and at a pace that’s hard to keep up with. Because of this, data centers tend to put all of their eggs into technological developments over infrastructure efficiency improvements.
    • Risk Aversion – The fear of downtime during changes can affect operational behavior.
    • Time Allotment – Optimizing operations becomes an overall behavioral challenge.
    • Payback Analysis – Easily obtained gains can get neglected or lost in the shuffle of such complex approval processes that leave little room for non-financial factors.
    • Staffing Constraints – When an operating system changes, it often requires skilled staff to learn how to work with it, which can be an involved process.

As mentioned in our previous blog, data is the lifeline, the heartbeat, of how the world operates. However, the world cannot continue to function as we’ve known without changes to the direct impacts data usage is making on it.

In Ascent’s most recent white paper, we discuss how data centers can take proactive steps to save energy and reduce carbon emissions today.

Additionally, you won’t want to miss the release of the industry book, Greener Data, where Robert Painter, President of Ascent, explores more about these points as a contributing author. The book launches on Earth Day, April 22, 2022!

Data — it’s the steady heartbeat that makes the world go-’round, and data centers? They’re the valves, the paths, pumping the data to and from the heart. And the usage of data is only increasing, but not without impacts on energy use and the direct increase of CO2 emissions because of it.

Sustainability for data centers has become an increasing concern and focus, and while strides have been made towards a greener future, there’s room for improvement. The entire sector is expected to own 14 percent of greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. With such a staggering statistic, it’s no surprise that customers of data center operators are looking for sustainable practices as terms for business, according to a recent study by 451 Research. Even more shocking is that only 43% of operators say they have a current strategy for implementing infrastructure efficiency initiatives.

While there are many actions that can be taken to execute greener operations, these solutions, such as MEP topology overhauls or infrastructure upgrades, aren’t always the most practical or best suited.

What happens next? The key is to recognize the availability of options and opportunities that don’t require extensive updates or significant investments to make a data center more eco-friendly. Finding efficiencies may be closer than they seem and doesn’t necessarily mean replacing legacy infrastructure with newer technologies. This starts with a good look within a facility, not outside of it.

Through a multi-year study, Ascent was able to identify five main areas of missed efficiency opportunities, all of which are based around data centers’ mechanical systems and include:

      • Unmanaged supply airflow delivery losses
      • Supply-to-load airflow capacity losses
      • Supply airflow to load ratio exceeded
      • Return setpoints too low and humidity setpoints too high
      • Lack of usage of built-in ‘ECO modes’

Download our latest white paper to read more about Ascent’s findings. Plus keep your eyes peeled for the launch of the industry book Greener Data where Robert Painter, President of Ascent, talks more to these points as a contributing author. The book launches Earth Day, April 22, 2022!

Extreme weather conditions and disasters can strike at a moment’s notice, and data center site teams face the brunt of preparing for, and addressing these challenges. The past year of rapidly changing operating conditions, and most recently, extreme weather conditions, have taken a toll on the site teams. Even with advance planning, strategic sourcing and creative resourcefulness, operational recovery plans are not only needed, but critical to support the field teams in the moment to maintain uptime.

So, how can data center site operations teams stay one step ahead of the critical response curve? With an Incident Response Plan. Quickly identifying the appropriate response to the incident and applying the relevant emergency recovery procedures, are all crucial to include within your response plan.

At Ascent, we concentrate on personnel safety and risk mitigation within critical facilities and data centers as part of the normal day to day operation, as well as within the Incident Response Plan. Ascent’s Operations Team assists organizations with building and improving their operational program to comprehensively address all identified risks within the critical environment and plan appropriately for disaster recovery.

Ascent recommends the following 10 Emergency Response Procedures be included in Incident Response Plans:

        1. Loss of Utility Power
        2. UPS Failure (Major Fault)
        3. Loss of HVAC
        4. Loss of BMS (Building Management System)
        5. Loss of Generator
        6. Loss of Switchgear PLC or Automatic Switching Control
        7. Tripped PDU/RPP Branch Circuit Breaker
        8. Chilled Water Piping Rupture/Uncontrolled Leak
        9. Loss of Public Utilities (Water)
        10. Emergency Power Off (EPO) Recovery

Each ERP is specific to the site the Incident Response Plan is developed for, with the primary objectives to maintain safe operations and mitigate risks to the critical environment.

Not only is the Plan and Emergency Response Procedures within it critical, but the process itself to update an existing Incident Response Plan is key to uncovering electrical, mechanical and controls related plant additions to further reduce risk in the event of an emergency.

With this, site operations teams can make every effort to prevent critical situations and be as prepared as possible in the case of an event. It is in these types of preparedness evolutions that site operations teams collaborate comprehensively to discuss and methodically plan emergency response. Not only do these collaborations promote the team morale, but they also serve as training for real events.

Whether tackling the worst scenarios, such as the Winter Storms of 2021 in Texas, or staying ahead of emergencies and disasters, Incident Response Plans provide the procedures and processes to enact proper reaction to any critical event.

Next Generation Hybrid Cloud Multi-Tenant Data Center Features Maximum Customer Flexibility with Abundant Space, Power and Connectivity Options

Ascent, a leading provider of comprehensive data center solutions, today announced it has strategically expanded its business presence following the recent acquisition of a data center in the heart of the second largest innovation cluster in North America. The facility, known as Ascent TOR1 Data Center, is located in Ontario’s rapidly growing Information Communication Technology (ICT) Corridor, between Waterloo and Toronto, in the City of Cambridge. The purpose-built facility and surrounding property enables Ascent to serve the growing demand for data center capacity in the world-renowned high tech area of Ontario.

TOR1 features enterprise-grade construction, reliability, efficiency, diverse cloud connectivity options, significant expansion space and power potential. The existing building that is approximately 270,000 square feet sits on a 41 acre parcel with 15 acres of pad ready expansion ground. The building is comprised of multiple enterprise class data halls with immediate availability and 120,000 square feet of shell warehouse space that has flexible design capabilities, which can be programmed as required by a tenant, including a high density, fast IT deployment block design featuring capacity up to 30 MW. Additionally, the site has a separate 25 acre parcel available where a customer can leverage the significant amount of infrastructure in place at the property but may require its own dedicated facility.

The overall campus is 66 acres with the potential for 100+MW of gross power. The flexibility of the site, combined with Ascent as the provider, allows customers the ability to lease turnkey, powered shell, build to suit with autonomous designs, or even design build with purchase opportunities as a few of the possible scenarios.

“The Greater Toronto area is one of the top five most populous cities in North America and the Toronto-Waterloo Region Corridor is home to 15,000 tech companies,” said Phil Horstmann, CEO of Ascent. “In close collaboration with the City of Cambridge and Waterloo EDC, we were able to grow our colocation portfolio with this first class TOR1 Data Center in a community known for its innovation and startup ecosystem. Local universities, startups, and companies, from large Canadian tech companies to major global businesses, continue to expand and invest heavily in the region. Ascent TOR1 is well positioned to support the increased demand in this fast-growing economy.”

“The City of Cambridge is thrilled to welcome Ascent to the region,” said Mayor Doug Craig. “Ascent has a strong reputation among global clients for their data center services and this represents an important investment in our community that strengthens our city’s position in the tech corridor. With access to Highway 401 and top education and talent, Cambridge is a great place to invest, grow or expand a business. We look forward to working with Ascent to ensure their continued success.”

“Ascent is a global leader and their decision to invest in and grow our local data center infrastructure will strengthen the Toronto-Waterloo Region corridor’s value proposition,” said Tony LaMantia, President and CEO of Waterloo EDC. “This is a significant investment for the region and the result of great collaboration between the City of Cambridge and our team.”

With multiple data center facilities in Chicago, Dallas and Atlanta, the addition of the Greater Toronto sites enhances Ascent’s colocation portfolio with the ability to support immediate capacity needs as well as accommodate larger scale data center deployments. Ascent serves global clients with its data center facilities and critical infrastructure services, including 24×7 Critical Facility Management, Ascent’s Navigator Platform and DCIM solution, Engineering & Construction Services, and others.

Ascent, a leading provider of comprehensive data center solutions, today announced that, in partnership with TowerBrook Capital Partners, it has completed the purchase of two enterprise-grade data centers located in the Greater Atlanta and Toronto markets. Ascent and the seller, a global technology company, have entered into partial leasebacks for data center space at the properties, known as Ascent ATL1 and Ascent TOR1 Data Centers. The sale leaseback arrangement enables the customer to focus on its core business and provides them a partner in their data center facility operations, while at the same time allowing Ascent to bring additional high quality, purpose-built assets to market under its growing data center portfolio.

This strategic acquisition increases Ascent’s ability to immediately serve clients, offering new tenants the opportunity to step into enterprise-grade data center facilities in major markets. These facilities are exceptional assets, well suited for cloud and edge deployments with plug and play data center space immediately available and line of sight to substantial growth on the properties. ATL1 currently has up to 8.1 MW of critical power and is expandable up to 14 MW, and TOR1 will have up to 4.8 MW of critical power available in the 2nd quarter of this year with the overall site capable of expanding up to 75+ MW. Similar to Ascent’s data centers in Chicago and Dallas, both Atlanta and Toronto are equipped with significant security characteristics, concurrently maintainable infrastructure for 100 percent uptime, and other site-specific features.

“This acquisition is a perfect complement to Ascent’s solutions set and its ability to deliver quickly on complex customer data center challenges. Similar to other data center owners, this customer was reevaluating its real estate portfolio and operational needs. Our team and partners were able to put forth an action plan that enabled us to execute on this international transaction on a compressed timeline,” said Phil Horstmann, CEO of Ascent. “We look forward to working with our customer and bringing these enterprise-grade facilities and their respective data center capabilities to market for additional tenants.”

Ascent serves global clients with its data center facilities and critical infrastructure services, including 24×7 Critical Facility Operations, Ascent’s Navigator Platform, Engineering & Construction Services, IT Site Services, and related services.
